HistoryFids of different sizes were used for different diameters of rope, used for opening the strands, and for tucking when splicing. They were also used for widening holes punched in canvas. A large fid like this one would be stood on the sailmaker's bench, on a table, or on the floor, with the canvas stretched over it. Large fids were used for making cringles.
