LORENZO was photographed leaving for Melbourne and Adelaide on Wednesday morning 5 November 1923. This is one of a number of photographs taken of LORENZO in Sydney Harbour during November 1923.
SignificanceThis photograph is part of the F G Wilkinson Photograph Collection, comprising more than 700 glass plate negatives of ships in Sydney Harbour between 1919 and 1936. The collection provides an extensive and well-documented coverage of the changing styles of shipping in the port of Sydney before the gradual decline of the coastal trade, and in a period which was probably the peak reached by commercial shipping in Australia. The backgrounds also reveal the changing face of the city and harbour foreshores.
HistorySS LORENZO was a steel-screw steamship of 6009 tons built in 1915 and originally named ASCHENBURG. It was built by J C Teck Lenborg A G Geestemunde and operated for the Hansa Line, active on the trade route between Hamburg, the Dutch East Indies, the Persian Gulf, America and Portugal. In 1919 during the aftermath of World War I it was surrendered to the British and in 1920 sold to Ellerman & Bucknalls Steamship Company Ltd who renamed the vessel LORENZO.
In 1929 it was named CITY OF CHRISTCHURCH and on the 1st of March 1943 was sunk off the coast of Lisbon by German bombers.
