    Description
The British cargo ship OAKWORTH was photographed at anchorage No 3 Athol Bight on Sunday morning 29 January 1933. This image was captured from the 11.36 ferry travelling between Circular Quay and Mosman via Garden Island and Cremorne, Sydney. OAKWORTH was owned by the Dalgliesh Shipping Company Ld in 1933 and registered in Newcastle under a British flag.
SignificanceThis photograph is part of the F G Wilkinson Photograph Collection, comprising more than 700 glass plate negatives of ships in Sydney Harbour between 1919 and 1936. The collection provides an extensive and well-documented coverage of the changing styles of shipping in the port of Sydney before the gradual decline of the coastal trade, and in a period which was probably the peak reached by commercial shipping in Australia. The backgrounds also reveal the changing face of the city and harbour foreshores.
HistoryOAKWORTH was a steel-screw cargo vessel of 4,698 tons built by A McMillan & Sons Ld in 1925 at Dumbarton, Scotland. In 1933 it was owned by Dalgliesh Steam Shipping Co Ld and registered in Newcastle under a British flag. In 1947 it was renamed CARRIER and scrapped in 1967.
