'No 2' baling hook used by Joseph Caruana, a wharf labourer during the 1950s and later. This hook was made to order by a local manufacturer at Millers Point. This type of hook was produced in three sizes: 1; 2; and 3. Four labourers, each equipped with a hook, were needed to lift a single bale of wool.
HistoryThe hook is a 'number 2', used for lifting bales of wool, which needed high lifting. A bale was lifted by four men, with a hook at each corner. The hook was made by a supplier at Millers Point, who made baling hooks to order. Hooks were made in different sizes, numbers 1, 2 and 3.
