    Midshipman Robert O Leach wrote this manuscript aboard HMS GLADIATOR. It contains technical notes, drawings and equations, navigational workings and exercises conducted on the ship's cruise. The notebook begins on 1 August 1846 while Leach was a cadet on board HMS GLADIATOR and goes through to 19 March 1848.
    SignificanceThis workbook provides a unique insight into a cadet's training life onboard Royal Navy gunboats and sloops during 'Pax Britannica’.
    HistoryRobert O Leach, a Cadet, Midshipman & Lieutenant in the British Royal Navy wrote three manuscript journals which contain a series of 'logs' detailing his life at sea from 17 February 1846 to 31 March 1861.

    Cadet Leach's studies were recorded in this mathematical and navigational workbook which begins on 13 August 1846 whilst he is on board HMS GLADIATOR and progresses into more complex navigational workings and exercises until 19 March 1848.
