    The author, William B. Whitecar Jr, sailed from New Bedford on the whale ship Pacific in 1855 for a five year whaling voyage. They touched on whaling grounds in the South Atlantic, Indian Ocean, Australia, New Zealand, Tasmania and then returned by the same route.
    SignificanceThis book documents the five year whaling voyage of the PACIFIC. It provides details of the Southern Ocean Fisheries including New Zealand and Australia, particularly Tasmania.
    HistoryAccording to Starbuck the PACIFIC returned from its voyage with 934 barrels of sperm oil. This is the second edition of a book originally published in 1860. It is identical to its predecessor and is the more rare edition. This volume has been rebound in full black leather with original backstrip laid down.
