Daily Log of the dredge Hydra at Bowen, Queensland, between 5th June and 27th September 1950.
SignificanceThis log is an excellent snapshot record of the activities of a river dredging vessel in northern Queensland during the 1950s.
HistoryThe daily log of the dredge HYDRA at Bowen, Queensland, between 5th June and 27th September 1950, is a detailed record of the movements and activities of the dredge. The log book was produced by the Department of Harbours and Marine of Queensland, specifically for dredges.

The dredge master needed to complete the times, including breaks, for every trip of the dredge, and to state how the dredge was occupied, and 'if not dredging, state reason.'

The dredging of rivers was considered essential to coastal trade, and northern Queenlsand rivers in particular required regular dredging of sediment to keep river depths navigable.

In more recent years, dredging has been limited as it has been identified as environmentally harmful, disturbing such habitats as sea grass beds - vital for dugong populations.
