    Shipping cargo insurance policy
SignificanceThe policy is in excellent condition and records an activity that was commonplace to the shipping industry.

HistoryThis shipping insurance policy was written up for a shipment of goods to be transported from Sydney, Australia to Liverpool, UK in 1960, by the Insurance Office of Australia.

It is typical of shipping goods insurance policies throughout the twentieth century. It covers 25 casks of 'wetsalted' calfskins for shipping between Sydney and Liverpool for an insured sum of 5631 pounds aboard the SYDNEY STAR.

The SYDNEY STAR (11095 tons) was a cargo ship built in Belfast in 1936 for Frederick Leyland & Co. Ltd., manager of Blue Star Line Ltd. After World War II, in which it was damaged by a German E-boat in the Mediterranean Sea, it was transferred to Blue Star Line Ltd. The vessel was used for UK-Australia cargo trips and was broken up in 1967 in Taiwan.
