    Description
This decorative certificate was issued to Charles Lindahl on 1 December 1883, certifying him as a member of the Federated Seamen's Union of Australiasia (NSW Branch) of the National Amalgamated Sailors and Firemen's Union of Great Britain and Ireland. It bears a printed signature of Samuel Plimsoll as the President of the British Union as well as signatures of local officials.
SignificanceThis rare certificate is significant in marking the early years of the Federated Seamen’s Union of Australasia, and in illustrating their symbols and slogans.
HistoryFormed in 1876 by the amalgamation of the Sydney Seamen's Union and the Melbourne Seamen's Union (both established in 1872), the Federated Seamen's Union of Australasia was registered in 1906 under industrial relations legislation. In 1925 the Union was deregistered for noncompliance and recurring disruption to shipping services. Many of the union's members went on to form the Seamen's Union of Australasia in 1930, which became the Seamen's Union of Australia in 1943. Despite amalgamations with other maritime unions, it remained the Seamen's Union of Australia until 1991 when it amalgamated with the Waterside Workers' Federation, which later became part of the Maritime Union of Australia.
