    Description
The piece of kentledge or iron ballast was recovered from Endeavour Reef north of Cairns in Queensland by an American scientific expedition in the late 1960s. The kentledge along with stone ballast, iron cannon and ship's stores had been thrown over the side of HMB ENDEAVOUR in an attempt to lighten the vessel when the bark ran aground on the reef during Lieutenants James Cook voyage up the east coast of Australia in 1770.
