Australian navy war ribbons. The first ribbon is the British War Medal WWI, the second medal is the Victory Medal WWI.
HistoryThe British War Medal WWI ribbon has a wide central watered stripe of orange, flanked by two narrow white stripes, which are in turn flanked by two black pin-stripes, further flanked by two outer stripes of blue. The colours are not believed to have any particular significance.
The actual medal featured King George V on one side and on the reverse was St George naked on horseback, armed with a short sword and stamping on a Prussian shield.
The rainbow coloured ribbon is that of the Victory Medal of WWI, also called the Inter-Allied Victory Medal as the design was adopted by other Allied countries. It featured the winged figure of Victory on one side with the words "‘THE GREAT / WAR FOR / CIVILISATION / 1914-1919' on the reverse.
