This watercolour was painted by an unknown artist from an engraving featured in Captain John Meares' account of his fur-trade voyage between the Northwest coast of America, Hawaii and China in 1788-1789.

The original image was sketched by one of Meares' crew, which was later reproduced as an engraving in the French edition of the three volume published account of the voyage, 'Voyages de la Chine à la côte nord-ouest d'Amérique, faits dans les années 1788 et 1789' published around 1794.
