    Description
A handwritten journal attributed to the naturalist John MacGillivray titled 'Torres Strait Expedition' (volume four of five volumes). The journal covers the period from 18 February to 16 October 1861 on aboard the JULIA PERCY and details the author's collecting expedition in northern Queensland.

This handwritten journal details the author's collecting expedition to Lizard Island in the Torres Strait and includes descriptions particularly of invertebrate life as well as egg specimens. Outlined is the account that during his stay on the island MacGillivray records the spread of disease and illness amongst the settlement and the resulting deaths. He also references to his intention of collecting for prominent institutions including the Sydney Museum, could this be for the Australian Museums specimen collection?
