    Tinted lithograph entitled 'Boston harbor 1854' after the oil by John White Allen Scott, printed by JH Bufford, Boston. This image depicts a commercial view of the waterfront and Boston Harbour as viewed from Fort Hill.
    SignificanceLithographs drawn by Scott are rare. Views of American ports such as Boston Harbour provide context for the development of regular trade between the east coast of America and Australia from the 1850s onwards.
    HistoryThis lithograph shows Boston Harbour as seen from Fort Hill. In the foreground is the intersection of Purchase and Broad Streets. The lively scene shows ships alongisde wharfs and the architecture of the waterfront. This print comes from the offices of Henry W. Peabody of Boston. The original oil by Scott is in the collection of the Bostonian Society.
