    Description
    This notice was issued by the Marine Branch of the Government of the Commonwealth of Australia to masters and seamen regarding the consumption of sea water by shipwrecked persons. It reads:

    'Attention is drawn to the harmful effects of drinking sea water by / shipwrecked persons. / Contrary to the publicised opinion expressed by certain individuals, / medical science and statistical research have shown that the drinking of / sea water by shipwrecked persons is certain to lessen their chances of survival. /
    It is therefore urged that: - / ON NO ACCOUNT SHOULD A CASTAWAY DRINK SEA WATER.'
    SignificanceThis leaflet illustrates the understanding of the effects of drinking sea water in castaway survival situations in the mid-20th century. It also illustrates the role the Australian Commonwealth Government played in ensuring the safety of seamen and mariners.
