    Description
This model represents the three-masted bark HMB ENDEAVOUR. ENDEAVOUR was under the command of Lieutenant James Cook during his first voyage to the Pacific in 1770, when he explored the east coast of Australia. This model was given to the Australian Government by HM Queen Elizabeth II in 1970 and unveiled at the National Library of Australia.
In 1990 it was transferred to the newly-formed Australian National Maritime Museum.
SignificanceThis model represents Captain Cook's famous ship of discovery HMB ENDEAVOUR, instrumental to the British exploration of Australia in 1770 and the subsequent establishment of a penal colony in 1778.
HistoryFamous ships such as Captain Cook's HMB ENDEAVOUR have long inspired the production of ship models. The EARL OF PEMBROKE, later renamed ENDEAVOUR was built in 1764 at Whitby, North Yorkshire for the coal trade. Purchased by the British Admiralty in 1768, it was fitted out for the Admiralty’s expedition to the South Pacific to view the Transit of Venus and locate the Great South Land.

Leaving in 1768 the ENDEAVOUR was commanded by Captain James Cook. On the return voyage Cook explored the east coast of Australia landing at Botany Bay on 29 April 1770.

Arriving back in England in 1771 ENDEAVOUR was refitted and used as a store ship servicing the Falkland Islands. In 1775, ENDEAVOUR was sold out of the Navy, renamed LORD SANDWICH and re-fitted as a troop transport. It is believed the ship was sunk with 12 other vessels in the environs of Newport Harbor, Rhode Island, in 1778 in an attempt to protect the town from an attacking French fleet.

This model of ENDEAVOUR was created by model makers at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich. It was presented as a gift from the government of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to the people of Australia by Queen Elizabeth II in 1970 on the 200th anniversary of Cook’s landing at Botany Bay.
