    a map titled 'Plan du Port et Baye de Flac, situe a la cote orientalle de lsle de France. Pau la latitude de vingt degres doure minuter s. Leve en Octobre 1776. Eshelles oi deux ioiser' ('Plan of the Port and Bay of Flac, situated on the east coast of Mauritius').
    The settlement at Flac, or 'Flic en Flac', on the east coast of Mauritius offered easy access to ebony trees growing inland and was a major settlement and port in 1773. This 1776 hand drawn chart details the narrow opening through the reef to the settlement.
    Flic en Flac derived its name from an Old Dutch phrase "Fried Landt Flaak" that literally means "Free and Flat Land.
    SignificanceThis hand drawn chart of a small port on the east coast of the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius is significant as an example of chart technology in the late 18th century.
    HistoryMauritus was first visited by the Dutch in 1598 but subsequent settements and commercial efforts by them over the next century did not meet with success. The island was abandoned but settled by the French in 1715 and became known as the 'Isle de France'.
    The French East India Comapany was in contriol and through them much work was carried out on the island, including building, fortifications and plantations. These delevoplments wer carried out by settlers and the importation of slave labour.
    The French government took control of Isle de France in 1767 and administered it until 1810. Under their control urther works were carried out and crops were diversified.
    In 1810 the British invaded Isle de France and took control, renaming the island Mauritius.
