    The New American Practical Navigator; being an epitome of navigation; containing all the tables necessary to be used with the nautical almanac, in determining the latitude; and the longitude by lunar observations; and keeping a complete reckoning at sea: illustrated by proper rules and examples: the whole exemplified in a journal, kept from Boston to Madeira, in which all the rules of navigation are introduced: also the demonstration of the most useful rules of trigonometry; with many useful prolems on mensuration, surveying and gauging: and a dictionary of sea-terms; with the manner of performing the most common evolutions at sea. To which are added, some general instructions and information to merchants, masters of vessels, and others concerned in navigation, relative to maritime laws and mercantile customs.

    SignificanceThis book universally known by navigators as "Bowditch" has remained the best known if not the most important American contribution to safe navigation. It was regarded as the first complete work on navigation for "The Common Man".
