SignificanceThis souvenir china plate highlights the history of the Australian shipping company, John Burke Ltd.
HistoryJohn Burke Ltd was formed in 1887 by John Burke (1842-1919), an Irish seaman who jumped ship in Australia. During its operation from 1887 - 1989, the company operated over forty trading vessels in Queensland from Brisbane to the Gulf of Carpentaria. Upon John Burke's retirement in 1915, his son John Edward Burke (1871-1947) took over management of the company and extended services along the Queensland coast. During the 1920s and 1930s the company suffered some difficulties with the loss of two ships and were affected by waterfront strikes.

In December 1989 receivers were appointed to John Burke Ltd.
