HistoryBoth ladies of Llangollen, Eleanor Charlotte Butler (1739 – 1829) and Sarah Ponsonby (1755 - 1831) were from aristocratic Anglo Irish families.

They had met in 1768 and became friends. Eleanor had no inclination to marry and was being pressured to enter a convent. Sarah was being pressured into a marriage she did not want. To escape their fates they tried unsuccessfully to elope in 1778. Their families finally acquiesced and the couple moved to Plas Newydd in Wales near the town of Llangollen in 1780. They lived together for fifty years.
