This piece of treated timber is most likely from a shipwreck, possibly HMAS PSYCHE.
SignificanceThis piece of timber offers a tangible link to a ship, possibly HMAS PSYCHE, and remains a symbol of wrecked and sunken ships.
HistoryThe HMAS PSYCHE was launched in 1898 as part of the imperial squadron, and was transferred to the Royal Australian Navy in 1915. During World War One, it patrolled the Burma coast and Malayan Archipelago, as well as the coast of South China and Indo-China. In 1922 it was sold to the timber merchants of Newcastle, Mills and Righby, and was used as a timber lighter until it was sunk in 1925.
