    Crew of Chatham Class Light Cruiser HMAS SYDNEY (I).
    HistoryHMAS SYDNEY (I) was one of the first ships commissioned into the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) after its formation in 1911. Laid down in 1911 in Scotland, SYDNEY was launched in 1912 and arrived at Albany, Western Australia in September 1913. The cruiser displaced 5,400 tons. SYDNEY's first duty was to escort the submarines AE1 and AE2 to Singapore in March 1914 and spent the period to the outbreak of the First World War in Australian waters.
