    Description
This striking gold one piece swimsuit was made by Watersun in the 1950s. It features a sweetheart neckline, a form fitting panelled bodice with a halter neck strap and a zippered back to create structure and support. The swimsuit also has a flattering decorative rouched panel with a loosely gathered half skirt and elasticised legs.

SignificanceThis swimsuit is representative of 1950s beachwear fashions produced in Australia by Watersun.
HistoryIn the 1950s swimsuits and sunsuits were often shaped and textured with shirring, smocking and contrasting panels to create a curvaceous and ultra-feminine silhouette emphasising the bust, waistline and hips. The swimsuit was a garment for opulent display. Exaggerated angles and curves were created using internal wiring, padding and elastic panels to achieve a sculptured cantilevered bust over a pinched-in 'wasp' waist. This voluptuous look was championed by film sirens such as Brigitte Bardot, Jayne Mansfield, Jane Russell, Sophia Loren and Marilyn Monroe.

Watersun is Australia’s oldest privately-owned swimwear and beachwear brand, established in 1961. It has continued to thrive on its key belief that swimsuits should be engineered to comply with the specific characteristics of its fabric.

Its most recent collection (2009) by designer Rebecca Graham focuses on glamorous silhouettes and dynamic separates. The swimsuit range incorporates crochet trims and a tropical colour palette in patterns that are both solid and floral.
