    Description
This surf board bag was the original cover for a 2.2 meter Hot Buttered fiberglass board (00001328). It is a cotton and nylon blend, and features brown, orange and gold stripes with a denim section at the nose, and a drawstring tie at the tail end. The board's original owner surfed at Jervis Bay, Margaret River in Western Australia and Bali, and the bag would have protected the board from damage and sun exposure.
SignificanceThe bag is representative of the types of surf board protection produced during the 1970s.
HistorySurf boards, especially fiberglass boards that are prone to damage, are often stored and moved in surf board bags. Bags are made of cloth or plastic, and help prevent minor dings and scratches, as well as protect the board from sunlight. Long-term exposure to sunlight can turn fiberglass boards a yellowish colour, and make the fiberglass and resin brittle.
