Mast of 14 foot island class dinghy SIRIUS, made of varnished Oregon wood. The mast is fitted with the following rigging: (1) peak halyard (2) throat halyard (3) block for spinnaker pole lift.
SignificanceThe dingy SIRIUS represents the activities and leisure pastimes of naval officers and is also an excellent example of a clinker built, gunter rig timber boat construction. SIRIUS was built and rigged by the Navy in Sydney Harbour using naval apprentices and boat builders.
HistorySIRIUS was built in 1940 at Garden Island Dockyard, by naval apprentices and boat builders. She was made for the use of officers on Australian warships whilst in foreign ports as a pleasure sailor as inter fleet regattas were often a pastime of sailors on foreign shores. It required a crew of three.
SIRIUS was bought by Bruce Stannard in around 1980 from Garden Island where his brother, a naval architect, restored her.
