Lithograph by S.Sedgfield based on a drawing by William Henry Raworth of Rushcutters Bay at low tide.
SignificanceWilliam Henry Raworth painted views of New Zealand and Australia and was active 1850's through to 1900's.
HistoryRaworth arrived in New Zealand at Lyttelton on the SIR JOHN SEYMOUR as a surveyor. He worked in Christchurch and is primarily recognised for his romantic landscapes.
Raworth could never stay still, his migrations were frequent and his residence anywhere rarely exceeded three years. He shifted between New Zealand, Australia and England throughout his career, and may have also lived in the Middle East for a year. He was never without notice and work as a painter though, and held regular solo exhibitions and taught art in both New Zealand and Australia.(
