This postcard depicts drapes made from the Union Jack and Australian National flag drawn back to reveal the Royal Australian Navy protected cruiser HMAS MELBOURNE (I). The reverse of the postcard reveals it is a 'Patriotic Post Card', issued during the 1914-1916 campaign against Germany and Austria.
SignificanceThis postcard is an excellent example of patriotic post cards that were produced during World War I. At the height of the British-German naval race, this card emphasised the unity of the imperial family through the slogan of 'One King, One Fleet, One Nation'.
