Letter from Hermann F Kroeger to Oskar Speck typed in German on Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany's letterhead paper. Dated 14 may 1987, the letter states Kroeger is convinced any report written about Oskar’s journey not by himself would contain inconsistencies, and suggests Oskar should write his own account.
    • Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany Sydney, 14 May 1987 To Mr. Oskar Speck 21-23 Scenic Road Killcare NSW 2056 Dear Mr. Speck, Many thanks for your letter dated 23 April 1987. I’d love to take you up on your invitation and visit you one afternoon after first arranging the date with you over the phone. It will have to wait, however, until after the holiday I am planning to take in June, i.e. until some time in early July. I’m convinced that any report about your adventurous folding boat trip to Australia is bound to contain inconsistencies if it wasn’t written by you yourself. That’s why I sent you my short summary which was to be printed in the local German weekly newspaper “Die Woche”, together with my letter dated 24 March 1987, in the context of the preparations for the Australian bicentenary. Naturally, a short summary like that can never hope to contain all the adversities and adventures you experienced on your unique journey. Such a summary can be no more than a sort of a book report (the writing of which I strongly encourage you to do). Your adventures should find mention especially in the printed media in connection with the imminent Australian bicentenary celebrations. This is why I suggest that you complete and correct the summary I sent you from your point of view. I also suggest that you send it straight on to the publishers of “Die Woche”, who have expressed their keen interest to me in printing this summary. Of course, you could also send the report back to the Consulate for us to pass it on to the publishers. Best regards, Your [Signature] (Hermann F. Kroeger) Deputy Consul General Die Woche in Australien P.O. Box 36 Bankstown 2200
