    Translation
    • 7, St Michael’s Flats Colsetty Colombo, 5 December 1935 Dear Mr Speck, Thank you very much for your letter. I have been very busy recently. Although this is the plain truth it is still not a big enough excuse for my not responding more swiftly. To put it very bluntly, I was not in the mood. [next page] I have had a gutful of this life in Ceylon. I have only one desire, namely to leave this paradise. I suppose it is strange but true, that if I want something really badly, sooner or later it will come to pass. Ms N. wrote to me and visited me shortly after. I don’t have any [illegible] for her. She told me that you keep writing to her quite frequently. [next page] If you find the time, please write to me to let me know how you are. Quite likely we will never meet again – but who knows. “Man thinks but God controls” – these will be my final words. I am not even sure whether this letter will ever get through to you. My best wishes for the New Year. I’ll write more if I receive a response from you. Your [a female person signing off] [illegible]
