Letter to Oskar Speck from the Captain of the REAEL typed in German, dated 28 January, 1939. The letter states the captain has no complaints about Oskar, however does not wish to become involved in disputes between passengers and is also unable to discuss the defamatory newspaper article.
    • 28 January 1939 Dear Mr. Speck, I confirm receipt of your letter of 24 December. In accordance with your request I visited the Resident Ambassador ' s office in Amboina and discussed the matter with the Assisting Resident Ambassador. Of course, we only talked about things relating to my ship and our company. Based on the fact that no-one submitted a complaint about you, that your behaviour on board was always impeccable, and furthermore, that I knew of and consented to your using a 2"d class cabin on your last trip with the " Read", I have not the slightest reason to complain about you; on the contrary! However, you will understand that, due to my position as Captain, I will hardly be able to interfere with disagreements involving passengers travelling under my command. I am also unable to discuss the newspaper article as it appeared without my knowledge and I had no part in it. I hope you have a good journey. Wishing you all the best. Yours faithfully, Signature Captain of the SS "Read" Mr. Oskar Speck Poste restante Manokwari
