    • Gerhard Garn Batavia I.G. Farbenindustrie A.G. 4 February 1937 Plant Agfa Berlin Branch Office: Geo. Wehry & Co. Batavia To: Mr. Oskar Speck Currently in: Surabaya Dear Mr. Speck, I have received your letter dated 24th January and am happy to hear that you have decided to purchase a film camera. As requested, I contacted Dr. Klaiber in regard to the possible refund of the duty we have to pay (Mr. Witte will be out of the officehouse for the first half of this month). However, Dr. Klaiber assured me that not even the consulate was able to organise for the duty to be refunded. Unfortunately, I do not precisely remember which auxiliary components you were after. As far as I recall, you wanted a camera with a standardnormal F:1.5 lens, a telephoto lens F: 3.5/80mm and a filter for each of the lenses. The total net cost, after subtracting the import duty, amounts to fl. 243,42 as listed below: 1 Movex 30 F:1.5 fl. 367.- 1 Telephoto lens F:3.5/80mm fl. 105.- 1 Filter for 1.5/20 lens fl. 4.80 1 Filter for 3.5/80 lens fl. 6.85 fl. 483.65 - 40% fl. 193.46 fl. 290.19 - duty (25% a.290.19./. 35.54%+187.06) fl. 46.77 fl. 290.19 I would like to add that we are obliged to make our calculationse on the basis of our local prices and cannot use Singapore prices. Although I am not aware of the Singapore prices, I can assure you, that they would have led to a higher price, because the maximum rebates there are lower than in India. Geo. Wehry & Co will be sending a letter within the next airmail to the Karachi company you mentioned, requesting the transfer – via airmail - of the amountbove mentioned abovemount. This is necessary for so that you mayto receive the camera, which we can only order from Singapore once we have received payment, before you depart from Surabaya. Assuming that you will already have left Semarang in the meantime, I shall address this letter to the German consulate in Surabaya. I hope you arrive in Surabaya safe and sound. Regards, Signature
