Photograph of SS CHIMBORAZO of the Pacific Steam Navigation Co. anchored in an unidentified harbour.
SignificanceThe Watt collection of photographs is very comprehensive, in addition to the vessels owners, most photographs are named and dated.
HistoryThis photo is part of a comprehensive collection of around 4500 photographs compiled by the late John Watt and his father.
The photographs were originally arranged into six albums according to the shipping company which owned the respective vessels. Very little is known about John Watt, who died at McLean in New South Wales, in 1992. He was a ship enthusiast and was the secretary of the Newcastle Ship Lovers Society in 1954.
It is believed John's father was a sea captain working the Australian coastal trade and he put together most the Watt collection.
The CHIMBORAZO was an iron, auxiliary screw steamer that made at least two voyages a year to Australia between August 1877 and 1891 for the Orient Steam Navigation Line before being sold out of service in 1894 the vessel was placed on the northern hemisphere cruise circuit .
