Joseph Heard

c 1800-1859

Joseph Heard was born at Egremont in Cumberland, the son of the elder Joseph Heard, a saddler, and his wife Mabel. He was baptised there on February 19th 1800. Like his elder brother Isaac Heard, Joseph trained as a painter in the middle of the growing West Coast shipping trade in the 19th century and initially worked in the port of Whitehaven. As the port of Liverpool became more important, Heard followed his clients and arrived in Liverpool in 1834. He is seen as one of the most significant 19th century ship portraitists working in the Liverpool region. He was popular with sea-captains and ship owners who often commissioned his work, over 100 portraits of his exist. He died in Liverpool on 17th November 1859.
