Institution: J W Norie and Company
John William Norie (1772-1843) hydropgrapher, worked on many charts during the early nineteenth century, particularly of the sea lanes and coastlines of northern Australia and South East Asia. Several charts were dedicated to the East India Company. He started his career working for William Heather, who had in 1765 taken over chart publishers Mount and Page and who ran the Naval Academy and Naval Warehouse in Leadenhall Street from 1795. After William Heather's retirement Norie established J.W. Norie & Co. in 1813 at the Navigation Warehouse and Naval Academy which operated under this name till his death in 1843. After 1843 the company was known as Norie & Wilson.
