Henry E Leman

American, 1812 - 1887

Henry E Leman was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania on 8 March 1812. At the age of sixteen he undertook an apprenticeship with the gunsmith Melchior Fordneyan. In 1834 Leman started his own rifle business in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and continued until 1887 producing large commercial orders of guns. He developed a number of sites for his business in Lancaster. Leman died on 12 May 1887.

Leman produced an accurate long rifle in the classic Pennsylvania tradition. The rifle was used by settlers, miners and fur trappers, as it was ideal for heavy use and could last for many years. His guns were a large calibre but easily able to be carried by those on foot or horseback.
